MEDIEVAL TORTURE MUSEUM

Fans of the macabre may want to pay a visit the Medieval Torture Museum on Hollywood Boulevard. While there’s no actual tie-in to the City of Los Angeles, which may make it a tough sell for some tourists, unless they’re looking for random fun in Hollywood, this can be a cool and creepy escape for locals and visitors alike.

The Medieval Torture Museum is the largest interactive historical museum in the U.S., occupying more than 6,000 square feet, with over 100 unique implements and devices on display. Here, you can enter the minds of fanatics, madmen, and murderers, and discover the world’s most detailed collection of confinement and torture devices. There are also medieval torture museums in Chicago and St. Augustine, Florida.

“We believe that those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it,” the museum’s powers that be state, “and [we] have amassed an unprecedented collection of cruelty, based on historical documents and engravings, offering a chilling look into the darkest parts of human history.”

The confines of the torture museum are underground and there definitely is an unsettling atmosphere as you walk among devious and deadly devices that have historically been used to torture and kill. The tour is interactive if you opt for audio or you can simply take in all the unsettling sites.

Entry to the museum also includes a “Ghost-Hunting Experience”. Download the ghost-hunting app to find and catch ghosts all over the museum and learn the chilling stories of how they died. The museum recommends keeping an eye out for the most terrifying apparition of them all—the ghost of Thomas the Executioner.

Another option the museum offers is booking a Night in the Museum where you can book a private Ghost Hunting tour for just your group. There are more than six different type of ghost hunting equipment. The total tour duration for this experience is two hours, which includes a short history overview of the paranormal in the museum as well as actual ghost hunting.

There are also combo packages where you can combine your museum visit with a Big Bus Tour or a Star Track Tour, among other options.

The torture museum experience is not recommended for anyone under the age of 18, however, admission is free for children under the age of 10 as long as they are accompanied by a dedicated adult (one adult to one child).

Admission to the Medieval Torture Museum is approximately $40, however, there are often many deals to be had that can make admission more affordable. When I went, admission was $30. The question is, are you brave enough for this experience?

The Medieval Torture Museum is located at 6757 Hollywood Blvd. Open daily from 11am to close. Last check-in is 30 minutes before closing.
