The Concern Foundation for Cancer Research, a non-profit who has raised funds for cancer researchers since 1968, raised over $1.5M at its 38th annual Block Party held on the Paramount Studios back lot on July 14, 2012.

The theme of the evening’s party was Oh What a Night,” which celebrated the 60th anniversary of the birth of rock & roll and brought people to their feet dancing to the tunes of the times.

This year’s honoree was Lance Freed, President of Rondor Music Publishing (a division of Universal Music Publishing Group), and son of the famous DJ Alan Freed, who is widely credited with coining the term “rock & roll” to describe the R&B records he played in 1951 on Cleveland’s WJW. Freed called himself “The Moondog” and his 1952 Moondog Coronation Ball in Cleveland is cited by rock historians as the nation’s first rock & roll concert.

“We had over 3,500 people attend this year enjoying the vibe of the rock and roll era”, said Derek Alpert, President of Concern Foundation who himself was a former music industry executive. "Over 50 restaurants, catering operations, cocktail, coffee, wine and dessert stations were serving their signature items. Once again, Le Spa at the Sofitel Hotel was booked all night for manicures and massages. The Brian Kramer Photo Studio sponsored by TEAM Concern and the Los Angeles Marathon and the 3D Cheeze photo studio were filled with guests taking souvenir photos to remember the evening. Tanqueray sponsored the casino-style gambling tables, which were full throughout the evening.”

A live auction presented by Concern’s celebrity auctioneer Mar Yvette, pop culture reporter for KTTV’s “Good Day, LA” and for the Huffington Post, left lucky bidders walking off with vacation getaways featuring airline tickets provided by American Airlines and one-of a kind experiences.

CONCERN Foundation has raised over $46M for cancer research and has awarded funds to over 650 promising cancer researchers throughout the United States and around the world. The non-profit, primarily volunteer organization currently funds 63 cancer research projects for all cancers at leading institutions in the United States and abroad.
